Aiglos: A gorse-like plant with white flowers that grew on Amon Rûdh. Also known as Aeglos.

Alfirin: Alfirin was a flower of Lebennin. Legolas sang of it when he told of the Grey Company's passage through those lands. He described alfirin as golden and bell-shaped. Tolkien envisioned alfirin as:"a beautiful bell-like flower, running through many colours, but soft and gentle ..." (Letters, #312) In Unfinished Tales, a flower named alfirin is mentioned in the tale of "Cirion and Eorl," but there it appears to be a white flower reminiscent of Evermind or Simbelmyne. Alfirin means "immortal." Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Anemones: Anemones were small pale-colored flowers. Frodo and Sam found white and blue colored ones when they were making their way through Ithilien during the War of the Ring. Tolkien hinted that Simbelmynë, which grew on the graves of the Kings of Rohan, was a relative of Anemone, or at the very least, quite close in appearance.

Asëa-Aranion: Another name for Athelas.

Athelas: Also called Kingsfoil or Asëa-Aranion. Athelas was a plant whose leaves could be used to help heal wounds and cure sickness. When bruised, the leaves had a fresh, wholesome smell. The usual preparation of athelas for healing use was to steep broken or bruised leaves in boiling water. The wound was then bathed with the water. The scent also refreshed all those standing near. A description of athelas is given in the "Unfinished Tales" (pg 319): “Then Huan came and bore a leaf, of all the herbs of healing chief, that evergreen in woodland glade there grew with broad and hoary blade.” In Middle-earth, athelas was only found near the Númenorean / Dúnedain encampments and dwellings of old. The Akallabêth spoke of the Eldar bringing gifts, including herbs of 'great virtue', from Aman to the new kingdom of Númenor. It is likely that athelas was among these gifts, and it may have came from the gardens of Lórien, where those who dwelt in the Blessed Realm went for rest. Huan brought a leaf of athelas to Lúthien to heal a wound given to Beren by Celegorm and Curufin. Aragorn used the plant several times to heal wounds during the War of the Ring. The first time was to heal the Morgul-wound Frodo had received at Weathertop. The next time was on Samwise’s and Frodo’s wounds after they left Moria. He then used it to cure Faramir, Éowyn, and Merry of the Black Breath in the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith. In the "War of the Ring" (HoME), it is said that Aragorn used athelas to tend Snowmane's wounded shoulder. At the time of the War of the Ring, it had fallen out of use, and was only remembered by the Rangers and in such old women's rhymes as this one: When the black breath blows and death's shadow grows and all lights pass, come athelas! come athelas! Life to the dying In the king's hand lying. Meanings: In Anglo-Saxon, aethel (æðele) means "noble." Athea (or athaya) might be a Vanyarin word meaning "beneficial, helpful." In Sindarin, las means "leaf." Thus possible meanings of athelas could be "noble leaf" (king's leaf) or "beneficial leaf." "Foil" means "leaf" (from the Old French "foille" and the Latin "folia"); thus "kingsfoil" means "king's leaf." "asëa" may be another form of "athea", meaning "beneficial" or it may have some relation to "lassë", meaning "leaf" in Quenya; "aranion" means "of the kings." Thus possible meanings of "asëa aranion" include "beneficial [leaf] of the kings" or "leaf of the kings." Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Beechbone: A very tall and handsome Ent who was drenched in liquid fire and burned like a torch during the Sack of Isengard.

Beeches: Beech was a name given to the broad, tall trees that grew throughout Middle-earth. The most famous beech-forest of all was Neldoreth in Doriath where Lúthien was imprisoned by her father Thingol. The name of the tree which held her captive was Hírilorn. It was three-trunked and was perhaps the greatest beech that had ever grown.

Belthil: The silver tree of Turgon’s courts, made in the in memory of Telperion, one of the Two Trees of Valinor. Its mate was Glingal.

Bregalad: Elvish name of Quickbeam, Ent of Fangorn Forest. Bregalad meant 'swift-tree', and he was named this after he answered an older Ent before the older Ent had finished asking his question. He was one of the youngest of the Ent-race and the protector of Rowan trees. During the War of the Ring, Quickbeam entertained Pippin and Merry.

Brethil: The brethil, a rare breed of birch tree found randomly throughout Middle-earth, was a fair and beautiful tree. The name "brethil" in Sindarin meant "silver birch" ('bre' meaning 'associated with trees' and 'thil' meaning 'to shine with a white or silver light'). With its smooth trunks, white bark, and green leaves, the brethil tree was very popular among the elves. In autumn, the leaves of this tree turned a pale yellow while the trunk remained it's normal waxy, white color. With inconspicuous growth rings, this tree was used frequently in making furniture. Having an ancient history, the Forest of Brethil was home to the elven people of Haladin. The Forest of Brethil was located in the western area of Beleriand.

Celeborn of Eressëa: Celeborn of Eressëa was the name of the White Tree of Eressëa. He was a seedling of Galathilion, the White Tree of Tirion, and he gave rise to Nimloth, the White Tree of Númenor.

Culumalda: Around the Field of Cormallen in North Ithilien grew the fairest of all the trees of that region. They were called Culumalda, which meant "golden-red". *Note*: The Culumalda are only ever mentioned in a note by Christopher Tolkien. We can assume by the name of the trees that they would be tall and slender and would be clothed in leaves in the hues of red and gold.

Culúrien: Another name for Laurelin, the younger of the Two Trees of Valinor.

Eglantine: Eglantine was a type of wild rose that bore sweet-smelling leaves and flowers. Frodo and Sam found some when they were traveling through Ithilien during the War of the Ring. Eglantine was also known as Sweet-briar.

Elanor: Also called: sun-star A small, golden flower that grew on the slopes of Cerin Amroth in the land of Lothlórien. Its name meant sun-star, and it was one of the most beautiful flowers in Middle-earth. Aragorn and Arwen plighted their troth on Cerin Amroth among the elanor and niphredil, and when Aragorn returned to Lothlórien as a member of the Fellowship, he held a blossom of elanor as he remembered his time with Arwen. Samwise Gamgee named his first daughter Elanor the Fair. It was customary to name Hobbit-lasses after flowers, and Sam chose Elanor because of his daughter's great beauty. Meaning: Elanor is composed of the words "el" meaning "star" and "anor" meaning "sun." Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Entings: The term for young Ents. There were no new Entings since the Entwives disappeared, so the Ent population dwindled.

Ents: Also called the Onodrim and 'Shepherds of the Trees'. The Ents were created by Ilúvatur for Yavanna to protect the forests and plants of Middle-earth as Yavanna was scared of what Aulë's dwarves might do to her woodlands. They originated just after the Elves. They were tall, tree-like beings, and had varied looks and numbers of toes and fingers. They all looked like trees, but trees of different types - beech, rowan, elm, willow and so forth. Their skin was like tree bark, very tough and thick. They were not a very quick-moving race, spending much time thinking things over, and their language was slow and long. They didn't like to be hasty to make decisions, but when they did decide, they stuck to their agreements. By the time of the War of the Ring their numbers had shrunk dramatically, and there were no more Entwives to be found, and thus no Entings. Some Ents lived in Fangorn Forest, and it was these that brought about the destruction of Isengard.

Entwives: The Entwives left Middle-earth long ago, and it was not known where they went. While the Ents loved the great trees and wild woods, Entwives had their minds on other things. Outside of their forest, they had found wild apple trees and cherry trees. They did not want to talk to them, instead wanting them to obey the Entwives' every command. The Entwives ordered them to grow fruit and leaves to their liking, and as they wanted peace and order, they made gardens to live in. The Ents wandered the earth as the Entwives stayed put. The Ents would visit sometimes, but would always leave again. After the war of the Last Alliance, the Entwives disappeared. The Ents searched for them and called their names, but never found them. They search for them still, because with no Entwives, there could be no Entings, and their race would eventually die out. The only Entwife mentioned by name is Fimbrethil, beloved of Treebeard.

Evermind: Also called Simbelmynë. Evermind was the fair white flowers that grew over the barrows of the kings of the land of Rohan. The flowers were like glittering crystals of snow that blossomed in all seasons, glinting away with starlight on the tombs of these kings. And to the Rohirrim and common Men alike the white flowers on the green swards were always a reminder of the power of the strong kings of the Mark.

Fangorn: Another name for Treebeard.

Fimbrethil: "Slim-Birch" or "Slender Beech". Another name for the Entwife known as Wandlimb.

Finglas: Another name for the Ent called Leaflock.

Fladrif: Another name for the Ent Skinbark.

Galathilion: "Radiant Holy Moons". Galathilion was the Grey-elves name for the White Tree of Tirion. He was created for the Vanyar by Yavanna in the image of Telperion. He grew beneath the Mindon Eldaliéva, the Tower of Ingwë, in a high open courtyard. His immediate descendant was Celeborn of Eressëa, the White Tree of Eressëa.

Galenas: In the land of Númenor grew the broad-leafed herb galenas, which was prized for the fragrance of its flowers. Before that land was swallowed by the Western Sea, mariners of Númenor brought it to Middle-earth, where it grew in abundance about the settlements of the descendants of Númenor. The Hobbits took the broad leaves of galenas, dried them and shredded them, and smoked them through pipes. The Hobbits called the dried leaves pipe-weed, but it was also called by other names: westmansweed and Nicotiana.

Glingal: The golden tree made by Turgon of Gondolin in memory of Laurelin, one of the Two Trees of Valinor. Its mate was Belthil.

Halflings’ Leaf: Another name for pipe-weed.

Hírilorn: Hírilorn was a beech-tree and the tallest and greatest of all the trees in the Forest of Neldoreth in the northern kingdom of Doriath. This magnificent tree that was not far from the gates of Menegroth had three trunks equally round and smooth; the only branches that grew from them was a great height above the ground. King Thingol bade Lúthien to dwell in a house that was built in between the trunks of Hírilorn so that she could not escape and venture into danger beyond the Hidden Kingdom. Lúthien, however, escaped from Hírilorn by means of enchantment and hurried to the aid of Beren Erchamion. For this Hírilorn received the name 'Tree of the Lady'.

Huorns: The Huorns were a kind of Ent who didn't develop distinct personalities, and ended up more like simple trees. Although they didn't speak, they understood what the Ents said. During the War of the Ring, the Ents managed to wake up the Huorns and make them participate in the battle. The Huorns were involved in the defeat of Saruman in Isengard.

Kingsfoil: See athelas.

Lairelossë: In the land of Númenor, in the westlands of Andustar there was the great Haven of Eldalondë which rivalled even the lands of Eressëa. Surrounding Eldalondë was a forested area that was so filled with a multitide of scented evergreen trees that it was called Nisímaldar, 'the Fragrant Trees'. Among the many trees that grew there was the fragrant flowering evergreen called Lairelossë, meaning 'summer-snow-white' which was first brought to Númenor by the Elves of Tol Eressëa. The names of the other trees which grew and flourished in Nisímaldar were oiolairë, nessamelda, vardarianna, taniquelassë, yavannamirë, and the malinornë.

Laurelin: "Song of Gold". Laurelin was the younger of the Two Trees of Valinor, and she had bore leaves of a spring green, like a newly-unfurled beech tree. Their edges were of glittering gold. Flowers amassed on her branches like clusters of yellow flame, forming glowing horns of bloom that spilled a golden rain upon the ground. From the blossom of the tree came forth warmth and a great light. Her rain was hoarded by Varda in great vats like shining lakes, and they were to all of the land of the Valar like wells of water and of light. Arien tended to her golden flowers, as because she was a fire spirit, she did not fear the heats of Laurelin, and remained unhurt by them. Laurelin was also known as Malinalda and Culúrien. She was the second of the Trees to come to flower, starting to bloom around the sixth hour, and finishing at the twelfth hour. After the despoiling of the trees by Melkor and Ungoliant, Laurelin gave forth one last golden fruit, which the Valar moulded into the vessel of the Sun. Both Galadriel and Idril were said to have hair lit with gold as though it had caught sparkles of the radiance of Laurelin.

Leaflock: An Ent also known as Finglas. By the time of the War of the Ring, Leaflock had removed himself from most of his brethren and lived in the higher reaches of Fangorn Forest where he grew ever more sleepy and tree like.

Lebethron: A tree that grew in Gondor; little is known of it, except that it was fair, and beloved by the woodworkers of that land. The wood of lebethron was used by woodwrights to make all sorts of different things. The Men of the White Mountains used staves of lebethron for travelling in the wild. The black wood staves given by Faramir to Frodo and Sam were made of lebethron wood, as was the cask bound with silver in which he brought the Crown of Gondor to Aragorn's coronation. Meanings: The meaning of lebethron is unknown. The word "lebet" means "finger" and might reference the shape of the lebethron's leaves. The word "thron" could be derived from "doron" meaning "oak." Thus lebethron might mean "fingered oak." Another meaning: The word "leb" means "stay or remain" and "thrôn" or "tharn" means "stiff or hard", so the name "lebethron" could refer to the tree's hard wood. Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Lilies: Lilies were found in the Gondorian lands of Lebennin and Ithilien. They were always white. Among Gandalf's array of fireworks was one in the shape of a lily, which could famously hang in the air throughout an entire evening.

Longbottom Leaf: One of the finest varieties of pipe-weed, along with Old Toby and Southern Star. Longbottom, in the Southfarthing was the first place in the Shire where pipe-weed was grown, and so Longbottom Leaf was one of the oldest varieties of pipe-weed known. The major grower of Longbottom Leaf was Tobold Hornblower, and his family continued the tradition. When Merry and Pippin found barrels of Longbottom Leaf in the ruins of Isengard, they all bore the brand-marks of the Hornblower family.

Malinalda: Another name for Laurelin, the younger of the Two Trees of Valinor.

Malinornë: Another name for the Mallorn tree.

Mallorn: Mallorns were a type of tree only found in Lothlórien. They were tall, beautiful trees with silver bark and leaves, and flowers of deep gold. Due to their coloration, the mallorns reminded the elves of Laurelin the Golden, one of the Two Trees of Valinor. Unlike other Middle-earth trees, the mallorn did not shed their leaves until spring, when the new leaves were already sprouting. Then the Golden Wood was carpeted - and roofed - with gold. The mallorn originated in Tol Eressëa, and the elves of that isle gave some seedlings to the Men of Númenor in the days of the sixth king, Tar-Aldarion. He then gave some of the seedlings to Gil-Galad of Lindon. In turn, Gil-Galad passed the seedlings to Galadriel, who planted them in Lothlórien. Later, the elves of Lothlórien used the giant trees as a basis for their housing, building flets among the branches. In the Fourth Age, a mallorn grew outside of Lothlórien. This was the one in the Shire where Samwise had planted the seed that Galadriel had given him. Meanings: The word "mallorn" means "golden tree" from "mal" meaning "gold" and orn meaning "tree." The plural of "mallorn" is "mellyrn", but "mallorn trees" is also an acceptable plural. The Quenya word is "malinornë", with its plural being "malinorni." Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Mallos: Mallos was a flower found in Lebennin. Legolas described it, as well as the alfirin, as being golden and shaped like a small bell. Nothing else is none of the mallos, however. Meanings: "Mallos" means "gold blossom" from "mal" meaning "gold" and "losse" meaning "blossom" (although this term normally references white blossoms). Information provided by Mark Hoff.

Mellyrn: Mellyrn is the elvish plural for Mallorn, the golden trees of Lothlórien. Though the Hobbits and some others called the trees the Mallorns, Mellyrn is the correct plural form.

Mushrooms: A favourite food of Hobbits. In the Shire, mushrooms that grew in the boggy region of the Marish were the most prized. Farmer Maggot grew them in his fields, and Frodo remembered stealing some from Maggot's fields as a child. He revisited the same farm years later, and the farmer gave him a basket of mushrooms as a parting gift.

Nessamelda: Nessamelda was one of the varieties of fragrant trees in Númenor.

Nicotiana: The type of plant from which pipe-weed was made. The genus Nicotiana is the same genus as the plant tobacco is made from today.

Nimloth: "White-flower". Nimloth, the White Tree of Númenor, was a descendant of Celeborn of Eressëa. He grew in the court of the King in Númenor until he was ordered cut down by Sauron. A fruit of the tree survived the Downfall of Númenor, and became a holy symbol of the Realms in Exile. Nimloth is etymologically identifiable with Ninquelótë, a name for Telperion.

Ninquelótë: Another name for Telperion, the elder of the Two Trees of Valinor.

Niphredil: Niphredil was a flower growing in Lothlórien atop Cerin Amroth, where among the stalks of elanor grew the white and palest green flowers of niphredil, on slender stalks. Niphredil also grew in the forest of Neldoreth in the lands of Doriath. When Lúthien was born, the white flowers of niphredil came forth to greet her as stars from the earth. Meanings: "Niphredil" means "snowdrop." The word "niphred" means "pallor or whiteness." Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Oiolairë: Oiolairë was a fragrant tree found in Númenor. A sea-faring tradition of Númenor was that a branch of Oiolairë was attached to the prow of each ship setting out on a journey of exploration. This would ensure a safe return of the ship and its crew.

Old Man Willow: A willow tree in the heart of the Old Forest by the Withywindle. He was full of malice and hatred for walking things. His heart was rotten, but his strength and cunning were good, he was a master of winds, and his song and thought ran through the woods on both sides of the river. His spirit had drawn power out of the earth, and it had spread till it had nearly all the trees of the Old Forest under its dominion. The hobbits encountered him in the forest, just before meeting Tom Bombadil. He had much power in the Old Forest, although he was not as powerful as Tom Bombadil.

Old Toby: One of the finest varieties of pipe-weed, along with Longbottom Leaf and Southern Star. Old Toby was grown in the region around Longbottom in the Southfarthing. It took its name from Tobold Hornblower.

Onodrim: Another name for the Ents.

Party Tree:

Pipe-weed: Pipe-weed was a preparation of the plant Nicotiana that Hobbits (and selected other afficionados) used to smoke. The pipe-weed plant was most likely not native to Middle-earth and it is possible it was brought Men of Númenor from over the sea. The pipe-weed plant grew very abundantly in Gondor, even though the idea of smoking it did not occur to mortal Men until the Hobbits introduced this concept. The plant was most likely carried north up the Greenway, by some way or another, and ended up growing around Bree. Tobold Hornblower was the first in the Shire to grow pipe-weed, in SR 1070. Before that date, the weed had only been smoked in Bree. The more clement climate of the Southfarthing made the resulting weed superior to the Bree variety in aroma, strength and taste. Meriadoc Brandybuck was the acknowledged expert on pipe-weed, accumulating all his knowledge in his book, Herblore of the Shire. Pipe-weed came in different varieties, among them Old Toby,Longbottom Leaf, Southern Star, and Southlinch. Also called: leaf, weed, and sweet galenas Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Quickbeam: Also called Bregalad which is an Elvish translation of Quickbeam. He got this nickname (and a reputation for being 'hasty') when he said yes to an elder Ent before he had finished asking the question. He was one of Skinbark's people, and the country where they lived had been ruined by orcs. He had smooth, shiny skin and grey-green hair. He could bend more than some ents, like a tree in the wind. He laughed often and had an affinity for rowan trees. He hated the wizard Saruman with a passion, and called him 'Tree-killer' because it was Saruman's orcs that killed his friends rowan trees.

Rowans: Found especially on the slopes of mountains and hills, these trees bearing red berries once grew in the western Fangorn Forest, in the regions close to Isengard.

Seregon: A plant noted for its deep, blood-red flowers, from which it took its name - seregon meaning 'blood of stone'. It was the only plant found on Amon Rûdh. When it was in flower, the head of that hill appeared to be bathed in blood. This proved to be ominous, as it was there that Túrin's band of outlaws were betrayed, and their blood ran among the red flowers of the seregon. It was a plant of the same kind known today as 'stonecrop'.

Shepherds of the Trees: Another name for the Ents.

Silpion: Another name for Telperion, the elder of the Two Trees of Valinor.

Simbelmynë: Simbelmynë was a beautiful flower of Rohan. It was a small white flower that blossomed steadily throughout the year. It grew on the tombs of Rohan's Kings in particular, and were said to grow thickest on the ninth mound where Helm Hammerhand was buried. Two other types of flowers are mentioned in the Unfinished Tales that seem very much like simbelmynë:
In Gondolin, Tuor saw white flowers called uilos, or Evermind. The other is alfirin. Tolkien envisioned simbelmyne to be "an imagined variety of anemone, growing in turf-like anemone pulsatilla, but smaller and whiter, like the wood anemone." The word Simbelmynë meant "Evermind". It was called that because the flowers were meant to remind you of the dead. Meanings: In the Old English tongue, "symbel" or "symel" means "ever or always" and "mynë" means "mind or memory." The term "uilos" could mean "ever-snow-white" or "ever-blossoming" in Sindarin. From the Quenya, "oi", which means "ever" and either "olosse", meaning "snow or snow-white" or "losse" meaning "blossom" (in most cases referencing white blossoms). Additional information provided by Mark Hoff.

Skinbark: An Ent also known as Fladrif. Following Saruman's injuries to the Forest and the Ents, Skinbark retreated to the higher realms of Fangorn Forest and refused to come down.

Southern Star: One of the finest varieties of pipe-weed, along with Longbottom Leaf and Old Toby. Southern Star was a variety of pipe-weed grown in the Southfarthing of the Shire, apparently originating in the district around Longbottom. The 'star' of its name refers to its star-shaped flowers.

Taniquelassë: Taniquelassë was one of the varieties of fragrant trees in Númenor.

Telperion: Telperion was the elder of the Two Trees of Valinor, and he had dark green leaves that shone with silver on their undersides. From each of his innumerable flowers a dew of silver light fell, and the earth below was dappled with the shadows of his fluttering leaves. His dews were hoarded by Varda in great vats like shining lakes, and they were to all of the land of the Valar like wells of water and of light. Telperion was also known as Silpion and Ninquelótë. He was the first of the Trees to come to flower, and in the first hour of his blooming came the white glimmer of a silver dawn. From all days thenceforth until the Darkening of Valinor, his blooming ended at the sixth hour. From the silver dews of Telperion, Varda created the new stars. When the elves came to live in Tirion, Yavanna created a White Tree for them, a lesser image of Telperion himself. That tree was called Galathilion, and itself brought forth other great White Trees of Númenor and Middle-earth. After the despoiling of the trees by Melkor and Ungoliant, Telperion gave forth one last silver flower, which the Valar moulded into the vessel of the Moon. In Doriath, the symbol of Melian was a white flower of Telperion.

Treebeard: Treebeard (or Fangorn) was the leader of the Ents in Fangorn Forest. It is not clear whether the Forest was named after the Ent, or whether the Ent was named after the Forest. Both were exceedingly old, Treebeard claiming that the Wood had seen over three ages of the world.

Two Trees of Valinor: The two trees Telperion (the White Tree of Valinor, also known as Silpion and Ninquelótë which is Quenya for "white-flower") and Laurelin (Quenya for "gold-song"), also called Malinalda (Quenya for "gold-tree") and Culúrien, were created by the Vala Yavanna. Telperion had dark green leaves and its flowers radiated a soft silvery light, while Laurelin had light green leaves and golden flowers radiating heat and light. The light from the two trees waxed and waned in turns during the day and night. This was the beginning of the blessed days in Valinor, as well as the beginning of chronology. The Vala Varda used silvery dew from Telperion to create bright stars in Middle-earth before the coming of the Firstborn (the Elves) - thus her names Tintallë (Quenya for "star-kindler), Elentári (Quenya for Starqueen) and Elbereth. The trees were killed on Melkor's order by the giant spider Ungoliant, who sucked out their sap. The light from the trees was then only preserved in the Silmarils crafted by Fëanor and stolen by Melkor. The Valier Yavanna and Nienna managed to keep the trees alive for a short while to produce one giant silver flower and one golden fruit, after which their blackened stems finally died. The radiance from the flower and fruit were collected in vessels and given to Varda, who used them to make Anar the sun, and Isil the moon.

Uilos: A small white flower also known as alfirin and simbelmynë. It was found in the fields of Lebennin.

Vardarianna: Vardarianna was one of the varieties of fragrant trees in Númenor.

Wandlimb: Wandlimb the Lightfooted was a female Ent, or Entwife, who was the beloved of Treebeard. Wandlimb was related to the birch trees, and consequently her Elvish name was Fimbrethil or " thin birch ".

Westmansweed: Another name for pipe-weed. Westmansweed was its name among the people of Gondor.

White Tree of Eressëa: Celeborn of Eressëa, the White Tree of Gondor, was a seedling from Galathilion, the White Tree of Tirion, taken to the island of Tol Eressëa. The seedling of Celeborn was Nimloth, the White Tree of Gondor.

White Tree of Gondor: This tree, a reminder of the elves and the light of Valinor, was considered one of the most valuable things brought to Gondor after the fall of Númenor. It became a symbol of the royal line, which was prophesied not to end as long as the tree lived. An image of this tree was used on the banners and sheilds of Gondorian soldiers. The tree originated from Nimloth (the White Tree of Númenor) which itself had originally come from Galathilion. Galathilion was created for the Vanyarin and Noldorin inhabitants of the town Tirion in Valinor by the Vala Yavanna as a copy of Telperion, one of the Two Trees of Valinor. Galathilion was smaller and didn´t have any light of its own. Nimloth stood in the courtyard of the king´s palace in Armenelos until the last king of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn, who had been deceived by Sauron, was persuaded to cut it down. He was first reluctant to do so, since he knew about the prophesy. The wood was burnt on the altar of the temple Sauron built to Melkor (Morgoth). Before this happened, Isildur managed to steal one of the tree's fruits and its seed was planted. After the fall of Númenor, the sapling from Nimloth was brought by Isildur to Minas Tirith, where it and its saplings grew until what was thought to be the last one died in 2852 at the same time as the 21st Ruling Steward of Gondor, Belecthor II. No sapling could be found, so the dead tree was left to stand "until the return of the king". A sapling was finally found by king Aragorn in the mountains and planted instead of the dead one. The white tree had survived, and with it, the royal line.

White Tree of Númenor: The White Tree of Númenor was Nimloth, who grew in the courts of the King of Númenor before being cut down on the order of Sauron. He was a descendant of Celeborn of Eressëa, the White Tree of Eressëa, and he gave rise to the White Tree of Gondor.

White Tree of Tirion: The White Tree of Tirion was the holiest symbol of the Calaquendi elves of Eldamar. In Sindarin, it was known as Galathilion ("Radiant-Holy-Moons"). The tree was made by Yavanna, and was created in rthe image of Telperion, one of the Two Trees of Valinor. It grew beneath the Tower of Ingwë in a high, open courtyard, but unlike Telperion, the White Tree of Tirion gave forth no light. Galathilion's descendant was Celeborn, the White Tree of Eressëa.

Yavannamirë: Yavannamirë was one of the varieties of fragrant trees in Númenor.
